Quong Ming Jade Emperor Palace

Cynthia suggested we next go to a temple a block away called the Quong Ming Jade Emperor Palace, located at 1123 Powell Street, between Jackson and Washington Streets.

As we came upon the temple, Cynthia stated, “This is the time that the Gates of Heaven are open, so this is a good time to visit."(In Chinese tradition, the seventh month in the lunar calendar is regarded as the Ghost Month, during which ghosts and spirits, including those of deceased ancestors, come out from the lower realm to visit the living. On the fifteenth day of the month the realms of Heaven, Hell and that of the living open.)

Chuck bowed to a gentleman sitting in a small room off to the left as we entered the beautiful temple. “This is the priest, Annette and Loyd.”

We moved inside and saw several women folding silver paper that was clearly meant to be symbolic of something. “They are folding the silver bars for the ancestors,” Cynthia told us.

We walked towards the back of the temple into a room with small plaques with photos and names in Chinese. Chuck explained, “They have pictures of their ancestors,” referring to the plaques. “They have the photos so you can see them.”

As we moved out of the back room, Chuck continued. “The primary thing in a Chinese temple is the burning of incense. We believe that the smoke carries the prayers to heaven.”

I began opening my perceptions to see what I would pick up. “I keep getting glimpse of a very small woman. Hmm, getting an impression, a very small woman, kind of stout. She was over there on the right side of the altar and then disappeared. Very fleeting, can’t get her again. I am going to walk over to the altar again,” I told Loyd.

Loyd leaned over and said, “Just an impression? Yes, that makes sense for a place like this.”

Cynthia joined Loyd as I walked back and said, “Ok, I saw her again, but very faint.” Turning to Cynthia, I asked “Do they ever put flowers on the altar?”

Cynthia nodded her head yes.

“Because I saw this tiny older woman,” I told her, “arranging flowers on the right side of the altar and then walking over and putting them on the altar. She has a very loving energy, but definitely an impression. A nice feeling, very spiritual person. A good feeling.”

I announced that the whole building has a wonderful loving presence.

Chuck said, “Well, Cynthia’s mother, Mildred Fong, is the high priestess. She is 91 and runs this temple. When Cynthia was little, her mother, who was born here and speaks English, translated for all the neighbors who needed forms and applications filled out.”

LOYD: The temple was not a place I would expect would have much activity, unless of course the spirits of the ancestors did come back to worship with their descendents. It was a very peaceful yet ornate place, and I thanked Cynthia for sharing this with us.
